Create a Send Message Power

Description

You have a means of sending a message to someone at a distance.

System

Spend an Action and Exert your Mind to send a message to a target within 10 miles. You must have a specific target in mind, but you require only an intuitive understanding of them, such as their name, face, or Location.

The message can be no more complicated than a multi-page letter or long email. The message can only be seen/heard/read/felt by the intended recipient, but you must share a language.

Enhancements

Connection (After your first message, additional messages to the same target don't cost any Exertion. Lasts two hours after the initial message.)

Conversational (Instead of sending a single message, you open up a line of communication to your target, and may continue speaking with them without any additional Exertion cost for as long as you maintain Concentration.)

Psychic Speaking (The message transcends the language barrier. You do not need to share a language with your recipient.)

Cantrip (Activating this Effect has no Exertion cost, but its level is capped at 2 Gifts, and it cannot be upgraded further)

Battery-operated (Instead of Exerting Mind to activate this Power, it has its own 3-point Source pool. The Source regenerates at the rate of one point per day and cannot be raised with Experience.)
Powers can share a battery pool by taking this Enhancement on each Power and specifying the same Source. Each additional Power after the first increases the capacity of the Source by 2, to a maximum of 10. This Enhancement cannot be used to enhance the owning character's source.

Group Chat (You may send your message to a number of additional targets equal to your Mind.)

Piece of Cake (You may activate this Effect as a Free Action, meaning you may activate it and take an Action in the same Round of Combat.)
A Free Action is one that can be taken at any time without spending the Round's Action. Activation costs (Exertion, etc) are unaffected.

Family Plan (You may use this Power on a particular target regardless of distance and without an Exertion cost. Choose one individual each time you take this Enhancement.)
Requires the Conversational enhancement for them to message you back. They can be included in a message sent through the Group Chat enhancement, but the Range parameter still applies to everyone other than them who receives the communication.

Database Transfer (Your message may have a payload of any size.)
This Power still cannot grant Abilities or Experience. Your target may not be able to understand or absorb the entire message without considerable time and effort. Depending on the Power's flavor, the message may be stored and recalled later.

Whisper Through the æther (You may Send Message to a target at any range.)

Broadcast (Your message is delivered to every target within range.)

Conditionally Costless (This Effect does not require Exertion in certain circumstances. The condition should be balanced such that it has an activation cost the majority of the time you are able to use it.)
If you take this Enhancement, you must be able to use the Effect at full cost and other times at no cost. This cannot be the same condition as the Drawback "Conditional" as that would imply that the Effect is costless any time you can cast it.

Triggered (You cannot manually activate this Effect. Instead, choose a triggering event, always outside your control, that activates this Effect without requiring an Action or Exertion cost from you.)
Cannot be taken with the "Conditional" Drawback. The triggering event must be outside of your control, and balance must be strictly enforced by World Leaders. Suitable events may include: suffering an Injury Severity two or higher, being grappled, falling unconscious, being tied up and bound, being angrily screamed at, etc.

Concealed (Using this Effect is not obvious. Choose a Tell that occurs only when you use the Effect; if-- and only if-- someone suspects that a Effect was used, they must roll Perception + Alertness, Difficulty 8 to pick up on your Tell.)
As per the standard rules, a complete success (Outcome of at least 4) is required to determine the source and target flawlessly. Lower outcomes may result in partial successes. Your Tell should be something small that would not otherwise frequently occur, such as a slight nosebleed, fiddling with an object, an intense stare.

Drawbacks

Focus (Using this Effect requires a specific kind of item.)
Subject to Playgroup Leader approval. Drawing an accessible object (such as one in a holster) counts as a Quick Action (-2 dice), and removing something from a backpack or luggage requires a Full Action.
Unique Focus (This Power takes the form of a specific, unique item, which can be borrowed, lost, or stolen. You must use / wear this item as intended to use this Power.)
Once per Day (You may only use this Effect once per day.)
Conditional (This Effect is only available when a certain condition is met. This condition must be severe enough that this Gift is unusable the majority of the time.)
The condition must be significant. Subject to GM approval.
Long Cast (This Effect takes one minute to activate.)
Traumatic (You must make a Trauma roll when you use this Effect.)
Flying Paper (Your message may be intercepted in transit, and any individuals near the target may be able to read or hear it.)
Exhausting (After you finish activating this Effect, you cannot move quicker than a walk (max 15 feet per Round) for one minute and suffer a -1 dice penalty for an hour.)
Exhaustion penalties stack. If you activate this Effect or another Effect with Exhaustion, your penalty will continue to worsen.
Standard Issue Communicator (Your target must be in possession of a specific device or token that only you can make. You target these devices instead of individuals, and if they are stolen, the message will be intercepted. Anyone who possesses a device can Send Message to you.)
You may create as many of these devices/tokens as you'd like during a Downtime, but you cannot craft them during a Game.
Tweet (Your message may only be one or two short sentences long.)
Maximum message size is that of a Twitter post (280 characters).
Sacrifice (Activating this Effect requires you to take a Severity-1 Injury instead of Exerting your Mind or spending a point of Source.)
You cannot use Armor to soak this damage.
Call From Inside the House (You may only target individuals within 150 feet.)
Laaaaag (Your message takes 30 minutes to arrive at its target.)
Fuel (Using this Effect consumes some material good in addition to its other costs.)
Maddening (Possession of this Gift causes a Trauma that cannot be cured by any means. The chosen Trauma must be particularly dangerous and/or restrictive.)
This Trauma should require a Mind roll to avoid serious issues and loss of Character control. For example, "you must roll Mind to surface from any body of water," or "you must roll Mind to avoid jumping into fire when you see it," or "you cannot trust your life to someone else without rolling Mind." etc.
Monstrous (Possessing this Power causes a mutation that elicits a strong, negative social response from the average person in your setting. The mutation is visible even if you are wearing long sleeves, pants, and shoes. Maximum one per Contractor.)
This mutation is ALWAYS present, even when the Gift is not being used, and ALWAYS extreme and difficult to conceal. This mutation may complicate social situations at the GMs discretion. Maximum of one Gift with the Monstrous Drawback per Contractor.

Example Powers

The Witch summons a crow, whispers a message to it, and sends it off to deliver her words. Half an hour later, the crow arrives at the recipient and repeats her message aloud in its croaking, animal voice.


Spend an Action to activate. Select a target any distance away from you. You must have a specific target in mind, but you require only an intuitive understanding of them, such as their name, face, or Location. This Effect cannot be used unless can only be cast where crows can reach. The recipient must be somewhere a Crow could reach. Otherwise the message is delayed until they are.

You may send a single message to your target. It can be no more complicated than a multi-page letter or a long email.

The message may be intercepted while in transit, and may be overheard, read, or otherwise understood by anyone near either you or the recipient. You must share a common language for your target to understand the message.

This Gift's level is capped at 2 Gifts and cannot be increased further.

  • Receiving a message does not force a target to pay attention to you, and they can feel free to ignore your message if they choose. Depending on the flavor of your Gift, they may or may not be able to return to it and read it later on.
  • Generally you cannot communicate with Contractors who are not in a Contract with you.

The Psychic can speak directly into someone's mind, engaging in an entirely telepathic conversation with the target's inner monologue. While they do, they take on a blank, vacant stare in the direction of their target, and appear to be muttering gibberish to themselves under their breath.


Exert your Mind and spend an Action to activate. Select a target within 10 miles of you. You must have a specific target in mind, but you require only an intuitive understanding of them, such as their name, face, or Location. This Effect cannot be used unless you can see your target.

You open up a line of conversation to your target, and may continue speaking with them without any additional Exertion cost for as long as you maintain Concentration

The conversation will only be perceived by the intended recipient. You must share a common language for your target to understand the message.

  • Receiving a message does not force a target to pay attention to you, and they can feel free to ignore your message if they choose. Depending on the flavor of your Gift, they may or may not be able to return to it and read it later on.
  • Generally you cannot communicate with Contractors who are not in a Contract with you.
