Sasaki Nobutoshi
The Man of Many Masks

A 5-Victory Novice Contractor played by TheSuperChrisb in Maelstrom

Sasaki Nobutoshi is a Plucky Kabuki Carver who will risk his life to avenge his family lost in the Nagasaki Massacre (Destroy the Cult of Adora).

He is 38 years old, and often appears as a nimble craftsman with greying, longish black hair and five-o'clock shadow. He has light brown eyes, a crooked nose, and a disfiguring burn scar on the right side of his face. He is usually seen in contracts wearing flashy embroidered uwagi and hakama. He often hides behind his handmade Noh, Kabuki, and festival masks, favoring the comical Hyottoko mask.

Sasaki Nobutoshi lives in Maelstrom, a setting where videos of the supernatural go viral every day. His journal has 6 entries.

    Loose Ends

    Powers

Sasaki Nobutoshi has taken on many roles over the course of his career. He's been an actor, a dancer, a magician, and more. One of the first tricks that he decided to master was slight-of-hand. His skills were invaluable in scenes where quick costume changes were needed, and he'd even be able to baffle audiences with his ability to switch between his masks on-stage in the blink of an eye.

The one hurdle that he could never overcome was the limitations of physical space. At the end of the day, a palmed item would eventually need to be deposited somewhere... After the mission in the mall, Sasaki began to realize that his palmed items would spontaneously disappear without so much as a sound. After a day of practice, he realized that he could swap between the items that have disappeared and ones in front of him. From there, it only took practice and experimentation to develop a stash of useful tools that he would always have available.

Spend a Quick Action to activate.

You may withdraw an item from your stash, or add an item that is within arm’s reach to your stash. You may only stash targets which are in your possession, grappled, or otherwise controlled by you.

You may store Masks in your stash, each no larger than something which could fit inside a briefcase (15 liters), and you may store up to 5 of them at a time.

You may choose to equip any equipment you withdraw at no additional cost.

Whenever you withdraw an Object from your Stash, you must immediately Stash another object to replace it. You may only stash objects you are attuned to. Attuning an object requires one minute of physical contact.

    • "Equip" refers to drawing a gun, putting on a piece of armor, etc.
    • Containers which hold multiple things may count as a single item so long as the things within are generally packaged together. For instance, you may stash a clip full of bullets, a medical kit full of medical supplies, or a box of crackers, but you cannot stash a backpack full of miscellaneous equipment.
    • You may only attempt to store Objects which are free-standing and disconnected from other things. The use of this Effect will not allow you to sever any connections holding an Object in place.
    • The Maximum Object Size parameter is intended to roughly capture the weight / size restriction of items and isn’t intended to restrict shape. GM discretion is advised. A human being is level 4 in the Maximum Object Size parameter.

Sasaki Nobutoshi has always been quick as a whip as well as a masterful dancer. Through the games though, his skill has improved exponentially. He has begun to develop a supernatural level of dexterity far beyond what he was capable of in the past. His hands have become incredibly steady and quick with the woodcarving blade as he has begun to carve thousands of masks for the lives lost in Nagasaki. The hands that have held so many of his carefully crafted masks, bringing love and care into each stroke, have become a source of power, filling him with a quick confidence that has spread through the rest of his acrobatic body.

His trepidation with showing his face, though, as become worse as a result of this newfound power. He relies on the confidence that his masks give him and has begun to count on their presence in order to focus and feel complete... so much so that he has become one with his favored Hyottoko Mask.

The unsettling mask, pink cheeks and lips askew has completely fused to his skin without a seam between flesh and wood. This mutation has removed the disfiguring burn scar through his lip and nose... but unfortunately permanent harlequin ichthyosis is not much prettier.

You gain the following benefits as long as he does not show his true face (disguised face okay)..

Your Dexterity rating is increased by 1. You may Exert your Mind to automatically gain an Outcome of 5 on any roll that uses Dexterity (Cannot be used on combat rolls or Power activations).

Possession of this Power grants the following Battle Scar: Face mutated into the appearance wooden Hyottoko Mask.

You also gain the following effects:

    • Bullet Time: Exert your Mind and spend an Action or Reaction to make a single dodge roll that applies its full Outcome to any attacks made against you that Round, including ones which cannot ordinarily be dodged, such as bullets.
    • Centered: You have perfect balance. You cannot be knocked over, and can maintain your footing regardless of the size or stability of the material underneath you.
    • Track Star: You may always move at your full Sprint speed without any penalty.

    • Reminder: to calculate the distance you can sprint in one round of combat, add together Dexterity + Brawn + 1, and multiply that by 5 feet.

    Legendary Artifacts

    Tengu's Mask

Created and held by Sasaki Nobutoshi.

    [TBD]

You gain the following benefits as long as you are wearing this Artifact.

You can move at two times your normal movement speed.

Your super speed affects all self-powered modes of movement, and you may avoid minor obstacles as you go.

    • Any Encumbrance penalty to your movement still applies, but you do not suffer from any sort of exhaustion.
    • Damage from a collision depends on your speed at the time, as well as what you hit. GM's discretion, but generally moving faster than a car on the freeway and hitting a dense, solid object like a wall or a tree should be lethal. Mundane armor will not apply, but any supernatural forms of protection will.

    Kitsune's Mask

Created and held by Sasaki Nobutoshi.

Sasaki lifts his Kitsune mask up to his face and spends a minute focusing on his desired visual form, taking on the role of this new individual. His performance is so convincing that every part of his being melts into a perfect illusion of his desired character. He may store the mask and put it away until he needs to refocus his character, or choose to keep it on. The disguise extends even to his clothing, and the mask can change forms to look like any form of face-ware, including glasses, headbands, headphones, and similar.

    Spend a minute to activate.

You become disguised in a manner of your choosing. The disguise lasts for an hour and a half, or you may end it early at will.

The new appearance must have a similar sex, age, and race to your own. You cannot significantly change your height and weight. Your disguise cannot directly mimic an existing person. You may change the appearance of your outfit. A disguise cannot affect your Attributes or other stats.

This Gift's Cost is capped at 2 and cannot be increased further.

    • While you may alter your outfit's appearance, this does not grant or store equipment.

    Hyottoko's Mask

Created and held by Sasaki Nobutoshi.
Hyottoko represents good-luck, and is often quite the benevolent figure in Japanese mythology. Though the appearance of this carefully carved wooden mask depicting a bald man with a scrunched, skewed mouth can be seen as unsettling, the actor underneath is almost always aloof and jovial.

Sasaki spends a minute pondering where he might've left the desired item, rummaging through his duffel bag, looking in nearby cabinets, and checking underneath tables before miraculously rediscovering where he misplaced it! If the item is small enough, Sasaki can even find it in nonsensical places, such as behind people's ears, under their armpits, or inside of their socks. The item looks and feels completely real, though its quality may not always be perfect. If the desired item is not created as a permanent Eternium item, it will always be spontaneously lost after an hour of possession. As an example, the item could be lost by accidentally dropping it, putting it down for a moment and turning away, putting it in a uncommonly-used pocket, or slipping it underneath a piece of furniture. Once out of sight, the item completely vanishes, waiting to be found by Sasaki in a future random location.

Exert your Mind and spend 1 minute to activate.

Choose an Object which could fit inside a messenger bag (up to 10 liters). It cannot be Alien and must be relatively basic. You cannot create explosives. You cannot create firearms.

Roll Dexterity + Performance to fabricate up to 5 copies of your chosen Object. The Difficulty is assigned by the GM and depends on the specificity of your chosen Object. Created item lasts 1 hour.

You may keep up to three fabricated objects at a time that do not expire after an hour.

    • If you want to make a new object which doesn't expire and you already have 3, you must choose one of those three and let it expire. You can still fabricate temporary items when you are maxed out on permanent ones.
    • You can fabricate a container of something so long as it contains a single type of thing (such as a tank of water) or it is designed to be packaged together (such as a first aid kit).
    • For setting the difficulty for the fabrication roll, something like a "shirt" would be difficulty 5, whereas "Police uniform" would be difficulty 9. The Outcome determines overall quality and how well the item fits the request.
