Jessica and Nancy

Jessica sighed quietly as she pulled up in the driveway of her home; a humble, white picket fence house that could be found pretty much anywhere. It wasn't remarkable in any way, unless you counted the modest garden she kept out front, but it was home, and surely that had to matter for something. The house could be found anywhere, but Jessica's memories and experiences within it... Those were unique and could never be recreated elsewhere.

But something would be changing soon. It had been Jessica's home for a long time, but soon, she would be sharing that living space with someone else. She'd just gotten back from the hospital after another visit to Nancy. The girl was doing remarkably well, and the hospital staff had reported that her injuries weren't severe. Still, they'd decided to keep her a few days for assessment, particularly given the trauma she had just underwent. That was all well and good, and it wasn't a notion Jessica disagreed with at all; in fact, she'd fully given her consent to the decision. What had concerned Jessica was where Nancy would go after she was finally released from the hospital; after all, the adoption center was nothing but rubble now.

In the end, Jessica had decided to take the girl in as her own. Nobody was more familiar with Nancy than she was, after all, so she felt that, with the girl having nowhere else to go, it would be a good arrangement. Still, she couldn't deny it felt a little strange. Jessica loved working with kids, but she'd never seen herself with kids of her own, biological or adoptive.

Oh well. She figured that it wasn't as strange as the sensation of driving the sedan that had once belonged to Nancy's now-deceased foster parents, but... Well, she had needed a car, and it seemed as though that investigator had been earnest enough about apologizing. She just hoped that she wouldn't end up meeting the same fate as the car's previous owners.

PSA on Common Household Pesticides

PSA: PESTICIDE SAFETY

Pesticides are a common household chemical that we use in our day-to-day life. They come in a wide variety of forms, including the most commonly known fungicides, insecticides and molluscicides. However, these chemicals can be poisonous to humans as well, and even lethal if exposed in too large of a dose. Read more to learn about the dangers of pesticide and how to recognize acute pesticide poisoning!

There are no pesticides that are 100% safe for human use. Even the mildest forms can be toxic if exposed for too long or in too great of a quantity. However, the following chemicals are most prevalent in cases of pesticide poisoning:

  • Organophosphate pesticides
  • Organochlorine pesticides
  • Carbamate pesticides
  • Pyrethroid pesticides

While the symptoms can vary between pesticides, there are ten main symptoms that share an overlap between all kinds of acute pesticide poisoning.

  • Excessive salivation
  • Tearing of the eyes
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Abdominal pains
  • Agitation, irritability or even seizures
  • Confusion or even hallucinations
  • Headache
  • Generalized weakness

Other symptoms can manifest, but these are the primary ones. It is important to take note that the method of exposure can affect symptoms. Ingestion often first manifests as nausea and vomiting, followed by abdominal pain; it is easily mistaken for the stomach flu and ignored, so be sure to remain alert! Confusion, tremors, and respiratory distress are also common; by the time seizures or a coma occurs, it may be too late for the patient.

Conversely, the symptoms of pesticide poisoning via inhalation or skin contact most commonly present as irritation and burning in the throat, ears and nose. Lacrimation (tearing of the eyes) is also common, as is blurred vision and a persistent cough. In the case of skin contact, you may also find yourself developing a rash.

If you have any reason to believe you may be suffering from acute pesticide poisoning, visit a hospital immediately. The first 24 hours are critical; waiting longer than that drastically reduces your chances of recovery. Remember to be aware of the use of pesticides in your area and stay safe!

Illuminated Earth

Illuminated Earth is a twisted reflection of the modern world where the advent of smartphones and the internet confirmed the existence of the supernatural instead of disproving it. Here, witch hunts have merit. Billionaires and Senators employ paranormal advisors and bodyguards, and everyone knows. Charlatans become pop culture icons, and each revelation inspires a new cult. The world is changing. The secret societies that pull humanity's strings scramble to adapt.

Now's a good time to move up.

Full Setting Description

They named that time The Illumination, and it was by the flash of a camera phone.

The year was 2004. Until that point the Earth was as we had always known her. We filled her cruel vastness with legends, superstitions, and rumors. Warlocks, monsters, and gods lurked on the edge of the collective consciousness, always a possibility but never more. We lacked evidence. That evidence came as humanity filled its pockets with technology equipped to capture and transmit.

An iPhone found on High School senior Nate Klienman’s mangled corpse held a video of his girlfriend’s bone-snapping transformation into a monstrous wolf creature. A Brazilian widow documented a series of conversations with the misty figure of her late husband. A Chinese fishing boat caught a mermaid in a net and put it on display in the Beijing aquarium.

Each week brought a new revelation that we were not alone. Superstitions reversed their slow death overnight. Salem held their first witch trial in a century. The jury rendered a verdict of “guilty on all charges” and sentenced Maxibelle Horux to death. A week after her lethal injection, half the jury died from a tainted batch of flu vaccine. A fearful, populist movement arose to rid humanity of the creatures lurking in its ranks. Suspects are forcibly subjected to bizarre tests of their humanity, and the results are often open to interpretation. A mob’s justice is swift.

Yet the paranormal is not merely relegated to a persecuted class. Where some see monsters, some see sentience, and others see opportunity. If a vampire can sustain themselves on cloned blood and work the graveyard shift, why not legalize and tax? Politicians and Aristocrats employ odd-looking individuals as "advisors" or "protection." Entertainment magazines publish revelations every week about which celebrities shed their human skins at home. Charlatans of all stripes, from palmistry mediums to televangelists, have flourished despite the risks. The treatment of the paranormal varies from place to place, person to person.

Long have cabals, cults, and secret societies thrived in the shadows. Their roots run deeply through humanity’s oldest systems of power. Machinations are challenged, and sleeping dangers awaken. The world is changing, forcing long-dormant powers into desperate action. And it is in the midst of this great period of change that The Powers That Be have once again turned their attention to the blue marble. For the first time in two hundred years, Harbingers approach worthy individuals with an offer they won't refuse.

The Games have returned, and a new generation of Contractors are being forged.

West Virgnia Adoption Center Under Supernatural Attack

WEST VIRGINIA ADOPTION CENTER UNDER SUPERNATURAL ATTACK

Yesterday at around 5PM, West Virginia Adoption Center was attacked and destroyed by an as-of-yet-unidentified man. Five total casualties, three staff members and two children, have been reported, with many more rushed to the local hospital in critical condition. The scene itself has left very little clues as to motive or the identity of the attacker, though police speculate that the culprit was likely in possession of supernatural strength or psychic powers, as damages to both the property and victims could not be explained via mundane means.

Jessica Williams, 28, an agent at the adoption center, reports returning from a late afternoon break to find the massacre. "When I first saw all the blood and mess, I didn't know what to think," Williams stated grimly. "I think I was in a total state of shock. I couldn't even scream at the sight of it all. I called the police immediately after snapping out of it, as well as a team of private investigators -- but it disturbs me to think that there is some monster out there that would attack a place filled with defenseless, innocent children. I hope that this is simply a case of supernatural madness, though I have a terrible feeling it's more than that."

Though all security footage at the scene was destroyed, CTV from a nearby building shows a tall, pudgy man with several hourglass-shaped tattoos dressed in black overalls entering the adoption center around the alleged time of the attack and exiting soon after. Anyone who may have information on this man's identity is encouraged to contact the authorities.
