Before the Gate Opened…
Marcus Vale wasn’t a hero. Wasn’t a villain. Wasn’t much of anything, if you asked him. Just a guy with a reinforced vest, a diesel-modified dirtbike, and a battered tablet full of routes no one else wanted to run.
While most Americans huddled in the crumbling cities or sold their labor to the megacorps, Marcus lived out of rest stops, converted weigh stations, and half-sunk truck depots along what used to be I-70. He hauled sensitive deliveries — data slates, prototype meds, sometimes organs, sometimes worse — across routes too dangerous or too dead for drones.
He had a name in the underground courier net: dependable, silent, and fast. He didn’t ask questions. He didn’t stay long. He didn’t join up with any of the loyalty corps because he didn’t like anyone owning his routes. Not the corp states. Not the resistance. Not God.
Truth is, Marcus didn’t have anything tying him down. Family’s gone. Former lovers moved on. He figured the safest way to survive the world’s slow collapse was to keep moving and not get too curious about what he was carrying.
So he didn’t.
